About Puri

Puri is a city and a Municipality in the state of Odisha in eastern India. It is the district headquarters of Puri district and is situated on the Bay of Bengal, 60 kilometres south of the state capital of Bhubaneswar. The Jagannath temple in Puri was built approximately 1135-1150 by King Chodaganga of the Eastern Ganga dynasty and finished by his descendant, Anangabhima Deva, during the 12th century.

Puri is also known as Sri Jagannath Dham after the 12th-century Jagannath Temple located in the city. It is one of the original Char Dham pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Puri is well-known by several names since the ancient times, and was locally known as "Sri Kshetra" and Lord Jagannath temple is known as "Badadeula".

Jagannath means "lord of the world" and is the form of Hindu gods Krishna/Vishnu/Rama worshipped in Odisha. Odisha is known for its famous and sacred Jagannath Temple, which is in Puri. The RathaYatra or the Chariot festival is celebrated at the temple of Jagannath, associated with God Jagannath.

Puri being a coastal district of Odisha, is famous for its Historic antiquities, Religious sanctuaries,Architectural Grandeur, Sea-scape beauty, moderate climate. It holds a wealth of attraction for the visitors.

In general July-March is the best time to visit Puri, though Puri can be visited throughout the year, except for peak summers (April-June). Winters (December-February) are a pleasantly cold, but good to enjoy the beach and visiting temples.
